「OCEANS」をテーマに、木を使って「動く海洋彫刻」を制作しています。

きっかけは、私の住んでいる近くの海岸に、約１５mの「マッコウクジラ」が打ち上げられたことが始まりです。その大きさと造形に「強い衝撃」を受け、以来「海の生物」とそれを取り巻く「地球環境」に興味を持つ様になりました。地球は面積の７０％以上を海に占められています。しかし、残念ながら、海に暮らす「生きものと環境」に興味のある人は意外と少ない様です。

一方、私の創る「海洋彫刻」は、全て伐採された「木」を使って制作されています。　本体は、桧、樟、銀杏など、日本では昔から仏像彫刻などに使われている木で創っています。台座、駆動部分は、樫、桜、欅、栗、楓など、比較的堅い木を使って制作しています。「木」は一つ一つ色合いや、堅さ、香り、粘性などに違いがあります。その一つ一つに魅力があり、ぬくもりが感じられるのです。その「木」を使って作品を創る事で、伐採されてしまった木にもう一度「命」を吹き込みたいと言う思いがあるのです。

しかし私の作品は、仕上げて展示する事で「完了」と言うわけではありません。展示した作品を、観覧者が「自ら動かす」事で、初めて「完結」するのです。作品を「自ら動かす」事で「アート」の楽しさを、より多くの方たちに感じて頂きたいと思っています。そして「海の生きものとそれを取り巻く環境」について、少しでも関心を持って頂くきっかけとなってもらう事が出来たらと、願っています。

My sculpture is themed on “Oceans” and the use of wood to create moving Marine Life. 

The very first motive for the current series of work was initiated when I encountered with a 15 meters long Sperm Whale washed up on the beach near where I live. Its size and the form was highly inspirational and since then I have been interested in Marine Life and the global environment that affects it. Over 70% of area of the Earth is consist of the ocean, however, generally speaking, it seems this side of the planet is not discussed much. On the other hand, my sculptures are made of wood. The main body is sculpted with Cypress, Camphor and Ginko; trees used for Buddha Statues from old days. For plinth and mechanical parts, hard trees such as Evergreen Oak, Sakura, Zelkova, Chestnut and Maple are used. Every wood has its own character, differences can be seen in colour, scent, and viscosity. I am deeply fascinated with every property and I see life of a tree through it. So by using the wood, my intention is also to revive the life of the tree in new form. However, the work is not quite finished yet at this point. It will be completed when the audience moves the sculpture. This is a moving sculpture, the movement created by the audiences, in other words, their participation, is part of the work. 

I hope my work will be able to offer something to the audience and to create more awareness on the Marine Life and its environment.
